A few words about what is required from me to provide live music for any event:
1) Although I may only play 2 hours at your event, I have to practice several hours regularly every week, preferably more than 2 hours a day. This involves technique study, repertoire practice to keep music in memory, and learning new material. It also involves reading music and creating backing tracks, both of which are very time consuming.
2) I must have a secure, dry space to store my equipment, which means expenditure every month no matter how few events I book.
3) In order to give your event the dignity it deserves, I must have dry cleaned, proper clothing, insurance, a registered, licensed, maintained vehicle large enough to transport the equipment. I must also have bought many more items that would not be obvious to someone who hasn’t done this, they range from software to musical transcriptions, and much, much more.
4) I have had to forgo creating social media posts because of the time required to simply practice.
So, when my price is similar to a service that is present at your event for a longer period of time, please remember that far in advance I have already had to study rhythm, harmony and melody, how they are written, as well as the intricacies of each of those domains, and I’ve had to put in years of practice and continual study. It is probable that the time I have already put in surpasses the time most of the other vendors have had to invest in their respective service(s).
